Hounslow is a long borough that runs from Chiswick, on the Thames, in the east to Bedfont, on the edge of Heathrow, in the west. Between those two points it takes in Brentford, Isleworth, Osterley, Hounslow itself, Heston, Cranford, Feltham and Hanworth. To the south it borders Richmond upon Thames, and in the south-west it meets Spelthorne, where we serve Ashford and Sunbury-on-Thames, so the whole borough sits within easy reach of the Surrey towns we cover on that side of the county line.

The east of the borough is where the older housing is concentrated. Chiswick and parts of Brentford and Isleworth have Victorian and Edwardian terraces and larger villas, many with a rear outrigger and a roof that suits an L-shaped dormer. Side-return extensions, loft conversions and careful whole-house renovations are the typical projects here, and original joinery, fireplaces and plasterwork are often worth keeping. Moving west, Hounslow, Heston, Cranford, Feltham and Hanworth are dominated by interwar and post-war semis and terraces, which lend themselves to hip-to-gable loft conversions, full-width rear extensions and, where the house has one, a garage conversion.

Planning decisions are made by the London Borough of Hounslow. Much of the riverside and a good deal of Chiswick falls within conservation areas, including Strand on the Green, Old Chiswick and Bedford Park, which the borough shares with Ealing, as well as the riverside at Old Isleworth. Alterations visible from the street are looked at closely in these places, and some permitted development rights may be removed by Article 4 directions. Homes close to the Thames, the Brent or the Crane may also need a flood risk assessment. Elsewhere, many single-storey rear extensions and loft conversions fall within Permitted Development, though permission may still be required depending on the size of the proposal and the history of the house. Parts of the borough also sit beneath the Heathrow flight paths. For an extension or loft room in those streets it is worth discussing the acoustic performance of glazing, rooflights and the roof build-up early, because sound insulation is far easier to design in than to add later.
