Merton is the borough that takes in Wimbledon, and a good deal more besides. Alongside Wimbledon itself, which has its own page on this site, it covers Raynes Park, Colliers Wood, South Wimbledon, Merton Park, Morden and Mitcham, running from Wimbledon Common in the west to Mitcham Common in the east. The character of the housing changes noticeably across that distance, and so does the kind of project that makes sense. In South Wimbledon, Colliers Wood, Raynes Park and much of Mitcham the typical house is a Victorian or Edwardian terrace. Morden and Lower Morden are different. The St Helier estate, which crosses into Sutton, has compact cottage-style homes where a well-planned rear extension or an internal reconfiguration usually makes the most of the space.

Merton Park is worth a separate mention. Its tree-lined streets were laid out as a planned estate from the late nineteenth century, and parts of it are protected as conservation areas, as are parts of Wimbledon and the area around Mitcham's Cricket Green. In these places alterations visible from the street are looked at more closely, and some permitted development rights may be restricted by an Article 4 direction. Homes close to the River Wandle may also need a flood risk assessment.
